Anniversaries are a wonderful thing as we celebrate a day that is special to us. The original event may have been just a year ago or perhaps many years past. For whatever reason, we humans seem to have the need to celebrate milestones in our lives.
Today is my wedding anniversary and I am grateful to God for sending me a husband who loves and cherishes me the way He designed. Marking the day we were married is truly a celebration – of life, love, and happiness.
I find an anniversary to be a good day for reflecting. What brought me to the original event? Why celebrate it? How can I see God’s caring hand through these life events?
On my mind today is how I met my husband and how quickly he wrapped himself around my heart with his tender and caring ways. Our wedding day was a special event where he lovingly encouraged me to do things that made me happy – and that, in turn, makes him happy. Both of us had (and still do) put our lives in God’s hands, trusting that He would lead us to the mate that was best for us. I am thankful daily for His provision for me in sending me such a wonderful man to be my husband.
While it is great to honour an anniversary or birthday, there are much greater reasons for celebration in life – the biggest one being what Christ has done for us. Think of it – we are all born sinful. Nothing we ourselves can do can make it better. Yet God loves us so much that He sent His only Son Jesus to atone for those sins. Because of the salvation Jesus bought for us on the cross we have eternal life with Him in heaven.
Think of the grand celebration that will be in heaven – a joyous reunion with all the believers from all time. And this is a party we don’t have to plan for. All that is required is belief in Jesus’ death and resurrection and being sorry for our sins. We can show up to the party in our sinful rags knowing that Jesus will cover us with His robe of righteousness.
I love Isaiah 61:10 “I delight greatly in the Lord; my soul rejoices in my God. For He has clothed me with garments of salvation and arrayed me in a robe of righteousness.” While I delight in my husband and celebrate my time with him; how much greater is my delight in my Lord and Saviour. God arrays me in all I need.
What a wonderful relationship I have with my husband – I know I don’t have to earn his affections. He loves me for who I am. Even better is knowing that I don’t have to earn my way to heaven. Jesus did all the work for me. All I need to do is believe.
