The gleaming red faces sparkle with delight as they race down the hill on their sleds. For the younger ones, it is the satisfaction of accomplishment – climbing up the large hill on our property and learning how to manoeuvre a sled on their own. For the older ones, it is pure fun and a remembrance of carefree days past when sledding was a favourite winter pastime. There is much laughter and good-natured teasing as siblings reconnect with each other and newer family members find their place.
It invigorates me to have my family around me throughout the season. I love the glowing faces of the grandkids as they anticipate the treats and gifts to come. I feel great satisfaction have many of my loved ones seated around the dinner table sharing a meal, whether a formal dinner or a pick-up meal after time outdoors. There are so many special moments – rocking a child in front of the lit tree, playing games, watching old Christmas movies, and so on.
As much as I delight in my family and in sharing celebrations with them, God delights in me more. In Zephaniah 3 God’s Word tells us: “The Lord your God is with you, He is mighty to save. He will take great delight in you, He will quiet you with His love, He will rejoice over you with singing.” (vs. 17 NIV)
Doesn’t that sound just like a loving parent? Can you picture what God is doing here? He holds onto us and soothes us with His words of love. He celebrates each of us – that we are His cherished ones. He is mighty enough to take on whatever comes and save us.
And of course, He delights in us. He takes pleasure in providing for us, especially giving us the gift of salvation through Christ’s redeeming sacrifice. God is the loving Father who watches us with a gleam of satisfaction over His wonderful creation.
These words of Zephaniah, originally written so many years ago, are a good reminder during this season. As we go into a new year, may we remember that God goes with us. He will care for and nurture us as any loving parents would their child. He will be there to celebrate our joys and to soothe us in our troubled times. God is there, cheering us on, with pure delight as we are His beloved children.
