Let Your Heart Speak

As I sit at beside my mom my heart is in pieces. It is difficult to watch her slowly deteriorate. Her earthly shell is wearing out and her mouth is barely able to produce any audible words. Still, I carry on a “conversation” with her like I used to – telling her about her grandkids and so on. Mom does her usual mumbles. Somewhere deep inside of her she is responding to what I have to say.

I notice a significant change in her when I started reading her Scripture. These particular words seemed to reach into the depth of her spirit and create a reaction:

These words that she has heard so many times over her long life seemed to bring her both joy and comfort. She has held onto these promises and they sustain her now through the challenges of dementia. My mother has the assurance of being in one of those heavenly rooms. It is her hope and rock through all these challenges.

These words of Jesus are so significant. When I traverse challenging roads, they are an anchor. Trust doesn’t come easy at times, but having confidence in God’s Word eases our troubled hearts.

These are words of which many of us need to take hold. Two very dear women in my life are facing hard days this weekend – the birthdays of their dear children who are no longer with us. These milestone dates are difficult, especially with the deaths of their children still being so fresh.

As I deal with both women, I find myself at a loss for words to say to make a difference. Yet, these words of John are the best. Both women hold onto the hope they have in Jesus and that they will see their loved ones again in heaven. That hope sustains them through this grieving process. It nourishes their spirits.

Jesus puts a strong connection in His words. He’s got this. But we have to trust and believe that. It is not easy on our own. Thankfully the Holy Spirit is there to nurture and guide us and to remind us of all the wonderful promises we have in Christ.

Whether you are facing a major hurt such as the loss of a loved one or the day-to-day challenges of life – God’s Word is sure and certain. We have hope. We have a loving Saviour who will support us through whatever comes. When we are troubled, He will be there – always.

I don’t know what you are facing at this moment but I sincerely hope that through whatever it is that you will hold tight to God’s Word. When you don’t know what to say – let your heart speak of the wonders of God’s love and the hope we have through Jesus.
