Steadfast and Sure
Today I spent time with my daughter and granddaughter. It was an afternoon with lots of smiles and laughter. Both delight in life and in the joy of being together.
It was fun to watch mother and daughter interact. They were quite playful. At one point my granddaughter was in my daughter’s arms and just flung herself backwards. She had no fear as she trusted her mother to hold onto her and keep her safe.
Children frequently have the trust factor down better than us adults. They feel safe in their parents’ arms and have no doubt that they will be caught should they fall.
In the Psalms we are reminded that our Heavenly Father warrants the same trust from us:
“The works of His hands are faithful and just; all His precepts are trustworthy. They are steadfast forever and ever, done in faithfulness and uprightness.” (Psalm 111:7-8 NIV)
It’s not just some of God’s precepts that we can trust but ALL of them. His promises are true and unwavering. We can confidently move forward in life because of our faithful God, trusting that He will stay constant and sure.
In these troubled times, this steadfast faithfulness is an anchor for us. When anxiety threatens or fears seep into our thinking, it is helpful to remember these words from the Psalmist. God’s promises are not just steadfast some of the time – they are faithful and sure forever and ever.
The biggest promise God made and kept is in the next verse in Psalm 111:
“He provided redemption for His people; He ordained His covenant forever – holy and awesome is His name.” (Psalm 111:9 NIV)
I love the word “awesome”. It inspires us to greater things as we consider the great and wondrous things our God has done – especially by providing us with a salvation plan. We are saved and sure of heaven – the covenant promise – because God sent His Son to save us from our sins.
We have redemption because of God’s great love for us. He cared enough to make a plan and fulfilled that plan with a tiny baby, born in a stable in Bethlehem. This baby, both true God and true man, grew to be a sinless Man who bore our sins upon Himself.
That’s what Christmas is all about – God’s plan of redemption – steadfast and sure.
As we get caught up in Christmas celebrations, continue to take hold of God’s wondrous promises.
