The In Between

Have you ever been caught hanging, not really in one place or in another – that wretched place of indecision, confusion, or disillusionment? Those days of not knowing can cause havoc with our systems – both physical and emotional.

As I sit in the in between at this moment, my heart is heavy. My brain is foggy and concentrating seems impossible. I am lethargic and strained. This generally out of sorts feeling just drags me down.

At moments like these, hope seems fleeting. It is incredibly easy to delve into the bad aspects of the situation and lose sight of the positive. The waiting seems indefinite and my patience weakens.

Life throws us these curve balls. There is not one human being who has a smooth-running life 100% of the time.

While we may generally feel powerless when caught in these types of moments, we actually do have the power of choice. We can seek God and His mercy.

Filling our hearts and minds with His delectable Word is essential to navigate times of uncertainty. Scripture is filled with loving words of hope and promise. When strong emotions of anger and hurt want to dominate, we can turn to our loving Saviour who sacrificed Himself for us and who understands every one of our feelings.

While it is tempting to get caught up in the hecticness of the moment and lose our focus, it is a time to instead pray more, not less. Prayers that seek God’s direction are the most fruitful. Asking God to follow our line of thinking and planning is not.

As I rolled out of the driveway on my way to work recently, God ministered to me through the words of Steven Curtis Chapman’s song – “Don’t Lose Heart”. This powerful song speaks of many Scriptural truths – ones that I need reminding of in this uncertain time. Then when leaving work, this song again was playing. Okay, God – I get the message. As God’s words of hope washed over me, I was sustained. That didn’t mean that all was suddenly right in my world but I did realize that hope is still there.

Finding our way in these in between seasons of uncertainty is never easy. There will be moments of doubt and pain and frustration. Sometimes it feels as if we will never escape back into a world of “normal”.

Hang tight dear friend. God will never leave you. He will walk you through the valleys and lead you to the other side. God promises us this:
“So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with My righteous right hand.” (Isaiah 41:10 NIV)

When uncertainty prevails, God will offer us strength and He will help. You can count on it!
