Things Hidden, Things Revealed
The headlines blare with the news of massive amounts of wildfires in our province. In our county many are forced to evacuate their homes because of fire out of control. It is tenuous times with much anxiety for many.
I live in 75 acres of trees. Having wildfires close at hand creates many moments of wondering If we too will be forced to find shelter somewhere else. Going through my home, finding all those special and valuable items, is bittersweet. Many lovely memories are tied to some of these things. The thought of their loss is deeply saddening.
At the moment, I feel better with some of these things packed in containers, easily removable to my car should the need arise. It would be crushing to lose precious memories of my children and items of family history. Yet, my heart is heavy that precious pictures and mementos are now hidden away, rather than out to offer me joy in remembrance.
Actually, for many years, these lovely items were packed away. I was trying to keep them safe from childish fingers and weather damage. But what good are they to me in a trunk?
Now (typically), my grandparents Icelandic Bible and catechism sit on my sideboard, a reminder of their steadfast faith and commitment to Christ. Items that were their wedding gifts grace my cupboards to remind me of the rich roots I come from.
Pictures of my loved one grace my bookcases as both reminders of their love but also reminders to pray for their well-being and lives of faith. Cherished books lift me up and encourage me in my Christian walk.
Our Christian faith is much like those valuables we cherish. What good does it do if it buried deep inside us and not shared with others?
In Scripture Jesus tells us:
“You are the light of the world. A city on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven.” (Matthew 5:14-16 NIV)
How we let our light shine is different for each individual. Some of us can verbalize our beliefs and talk with people about our faith. Others witness with their actions as they seek to honor God in all they do. Some share their faith with acts of kindness and compassion.
Through all we do, we should do it to God’s glory. He will work through us, if we are open to it. When we want to stay within ourselves how can we share the wondrous news of Christ’s death and resurrection? If we are looking to our own selfish desires, how can we share Jesus’ love and kindness to others?
My friend, when the temptation is to hide our faith under a bowl or in a trunk, I pray that we can at least find ways to proclaim the incredible Good News in some small way each day.
We have an immense treasure. How will you let the world know about it today?
