Where is the Joy?
As we venture closer to the Christmas season there are many representations of the concept of joy. The world likes to present joy as having all the stuff you want and celebrating with the people you want. If you have just the right gifts or the perfect table setting, then you will be happy. If your house has that perfect Christmas decorations, then all will be well.
Christian joy is another matter. As believers, our joy is not centered on ourselves, but on Christ, the Author and Perfector of our faith. It is a celebration of all that God has done for us and all He continues to work in us and through us.
In the Old Testament, joy is both forward thinking and looking back at all the great things that God has done for His people. Even in troubled times, God’s people look with hope as to what God will do as they have found Him to be a sure and certain Presence in their lives.
One great song of praise is found in Isaiah:
“Give thanks to the Lord, call on His name; make known among the nations what He has done, and proclaim that His name is exalted. Sing to the Lord, for He has done glorious things; let this be known to all the world. Shout aloud and sing for joy, people of Zion, for great is the Holy One of Israel among you.” (Isaiah 12:4-6 NIV)
On days when we wonder if we ever will feel joy again it is helpful to look at this Scripture passage. We can praise God for the wonders He has already done, in our own lives and in and through the lives of believers throughout time. As we shout His praises to all who will listen, our own faith lives deepen and strengthen.
Our God is a God of restoration. He takes what is broken and puts it back together. Often, this restoration is not in the form we expect. Our all-knowing God frequently knits the threads of our lives into a beautiful tapestry with colours we never even imagined possible.
When life gets rough, it is helpful to praise God both for the work He has done in our lives and to praise Him for what He will do in our lives in the future. As our hearts take a praise attitude, we are changed. Sure, our problems and trials likely still exist – but our mindset changes.
Praise also goes beyond ourselves. This Scripture verse reminds us that we are to share the Good News of God’s amazing work in our lives and the salvation we have in Jesus Christ to any who would hear. Who knows, you might be the one person who can reach a particular person with Christ’s love.
Life will get into a flurry here soon with Christmas preparations. May you take the time to praise the One who is the center of Christmas. Keep your minds and hearts in tune with our loving Saviour who came to earth to save us.
